Material experiments.

Stitching with fabric.

Stitching with string.

Sampling.

Experimenting with pattern. shape. colour. placement.
Trying to use the negative spaces as part of the whole pattern by leaving larger spaces empty.

tried the stitch on white fabric... I definitely prefer the neutral colour.

Finding patterns..

I constantly find my self being drawn to patterns in everyday life and seeing there potential as stitch.
When I looked back through my Thailand photos it was this gate and the pattern with in its structure which caught my attention.

Transforming this pattern into stitch..
Tweaking the colours I have been painting with and taking inspiration from Blackwork embroidery and passementerie I've begun sampling.
I've used linen as my ground fabric and in a neutral colour and experimented with the length of stitches and the scale of the pattern.

Hill top tribes - Thailand.

To help inspire and move forward into fabric samples i've had a look back at my original inspiration.. Thailand.
But this time i've looked at the hill top tribes and the garments and accessories the wear and make.

Passementerie.

Passementerie... is a French word relating to adornment.
For textiles, it refers to decorative trims,
 edges, braids and also buttons.
Most passementerie is constructed using weave processes
and/or hand and machine embroidery techniques.

An example of passementerie which I have been looking at is textile artist Elizabeth Ashdown (work below)

Blackwork embroidery.

 Blackwork Embroidery...

Small geometric patterns built up with simple running stitch.
the stitching is traditionally done with threads of a contrasting colour to the background fabric (usually black on white).

Beginning to Draw..

To begin my documentation I decided on a colour
palette from this image of the Wat Pho Temple.

I have a habit of rolling strips of paper and making shapes with them so I figured.. why not use this.
For the drawings below I have rolled strips of paper and formed
them in to shapes I have picked out of the
above photograph and printed with them, producing colourful patterned
documentations of the Wat Pho temple.
